If you live in a classic San Francisco rowhouse or a cozy home in the Sunset District, you already know that square footage is a premium commodity. Every inch counts, which is why thousands of local homeowners are ditching their massive 50-gallon water tanks in favor of sleek, wall-mounted tankless water heaters. If you’re wondering which type is best for your home, see our Boiler vs. Water Heater comparison guide.

But once you decide to go tankless, you face another major decision: Should you mount the unit inside your home, or strap it to an exterior wall outside?

At HydroFlow, we install both systems every week. Here is our professional buyer’s guide to help you choose the right setup for your property, your budget, and the Bay Area’s unique microclimates.

The Appeal of the Outdoor Tankless Water Heater

When you walk down the side alleys of many Bay Area neighborhoods, you will frequently see small, metal boxes mounted to the exterior siding. These are outdoor tankless water heaters, and for many homes, they are the absolute best option.

The Pros of Going Outside:

  • Zero Interior Space Required: This is the biggest selling point. If your current water heater is eating up valuable garage space, closet space, or basement space, moving it outside allows you to reclaim that square footage entirely.
  • Easier Venting: High-efficiency tankless water heaters require PVC exhaust pipes to securely vent combustion gases outside. If the unit is already mounted outdoors, the venting process is incredibly simple compared to cutting through drywall and routing exhaust pipes up through your roof.
  • Safety: Because combustion happens entirely outside, there is zero risk of carbon monoxide building up inside your living space.

The Catch: The Elements (and Salt Air) If you live out in the Sunset or the Richmond, your exterior walls get battered by wind, rain, and—most importantly—corrosive salt air blowing right off the Pacific Ocean.

Because of this, you cannot simply stick any tankless unit outside.

At HydroFlow, the only brands we recommend for exterior Bay Area installations are A.O. Smith and Takagi (which is now owned by A.O. Smith). These units are absolute workhorses. They are specifically engineered with heavy-duty, weather-resistant casings designed to withstand the harsh coastal elements, ensuring they won’t rust out after a few foggy summers.

The Case for the Indoor Tankless Water Heater

If you have a dedicated mechanical closet, an unfinished basement, or easy access to an exterior wall from inside your garage, an indoor unit is often the premium choice.

The Pros of Staying Inside:

  • Completely Protected: By keeping the unit inside, you completely eliminate the wear and tear caused by the elements. It will never be subjected to freezing temperatures, salt air, or driving rain.
  • Closer to the Faucets: If your bathrooms are in the center of the house, positioning the water heater centrally (if venting allows) means hot water has a shorter distance to travel, reducing wait times at the tap.

The Premium Choice: Navien When homeowners ask for our recommendation on an interior tankless water heater, we almost universally recommend Navien.

Navien units are the sleekest, most intelligent tankless systems on the market. They have an excellent digital interface, incredibly precise sensors, and many models feature a built-in intelligent recirculation pump to give you near-instant hot water. However, while some Navien models are rated for outdoor use, they are essentially highly calibrated computers. We strongly believe their sensitive electronics and premium aesthetic are best protected by keeping them indoors.

The One Rule for Both: Annual Maintenance is Non-Negotiable

Whether you mount an A.O. Smith outside in the salt air or a Navien inside your pristine garage, the most important part of owning a tankless water heater remains exactly the same: You must flush it every year.

Tankless water heaters use a high-powered burner to flash-heat water as it passes through a narrow heat exchanger. Much like an old kettle left on the stove, the intense heat causes the minerals in your water to rapidly calcify and build up as stubborn scale inside the pipes.

If you ignore that scale buildup:

  1. The flow of water becomes restricted.
  2. The heat exchanger can no longer cool itself down.
  3. The unit overheats, throws an error code (like a Navien 003 flame failure), and eventually cracks the heat exchanger.

At HydroFlow, whenever we install a tankless system—indoors or outdoors—we automatically install flush valves. We recommend scheduling an annual maintenance visit where we will hook up a pump, flush the system with an anti-scale solution to dissolve the mineral buildup, clean the ignitors, and replace the condensate neutralizer.
