A.O. Smith FAQ
What does A.O. Smith Error Code E02 mean?
On tankless units, E02 usually indicates a ‘No Flame’ condition — the unit tried to light but failed. This can be due to no gas supply, low gas pressure, or a dirty flame sensor. Verify your gas is on. If it is, you likely need a technician to clean the sensor and check gas pressure.
Why is my A.O. Smith hybrid water heater showing an error?
Hybrid units have complex electronics. Common codes relate to the compressor or fan. Try resetting the unit at the breaker. If the code returns, the heat pump module likely needs service — though the unit may still work in ‘Electric Only’ mode temporarily to give you hot water while you wait for service.
Can I install an A.O. Smith tankless unit on the exterior of my home?
Yes — A.O. Smith and Takagi make our recommended outdoor units for coastal Bay Area homes. We install flush valves on all exterior units for annual maintenance access. The annual service includes flushing the heat exchanger, inspecting exterior-rated wiring, cleaning the igniter, and replacing the neutralizer.
How often should I flush my A.O. Smith tankless?
Annually, with a vinegar-based descaling solution to remove mineral buildup. This is critical in hard water areas — scale in the heat exchanger leads to error codes and eventually failure. Book annual maintenance and we handle this for you.
