What does Rheem Error Code A101 or A102 mean?
These codes on a Rheem tankless unit usually indicate an air intake or exhaust issue — the unit isn’t breathing properly. Check for blockages in your vent pipes (bird nests, debris) or a clogged air filter screen. If venting is clear and the code returns, a technician needs to inspect the combustion system.
Why is my Rheem hybrid water heater making noise?
Hybrid (heat pump) water heaters have a fan and compressor, so they do sound like a refrigerator running — that’s normal operation. However, grinding or loud rattling is not normal and could indicate a failing fan motor or compressor component. Book a service call if you hear unusual sounds.
What maintenance does a Rheem heat pump water heater need?
Clean the air filter every 3-6 months — heat pump units pull ambient air through a filter and it clogs faster than you’d expect. Also test the T&P relief valve annually and flush the tank to remove sediment, same as a standard water heater. We handle all of this in our annual maintenance visit.
Does my home qualify for Rheem heat pump rebates?
Very likely yes. PG&E currently offers rebates on qualifying heat pump water heaters, and federal tax credits are also available. The total incentive can significantly offset the higher upfront cost. What does Rheem Error Code E4 or E5 mean on a hybrid water heater?
E4 and E5 on Rheem ProTerra and hybrid models indicate upper or lower thermostat sensor failures. The sensor that monitors water temperature has either shorted or gone open circuit. The unit will usually fall back to electric-only mode (no heat pump) as a safety measure. A technician needs to test and replace the failed sensor — the unit won’t run in efficient heat pump mode until it’s fixed.
My Rheem water heater’s status light is blinking — what does it mean?
Rheem gas tank water heaters use a blinking LED on the gas valve to indicate status. Steady blinking is normal (pilot lit, standing by). Fast or irregular blinks indicate a fault — count the blinks per cycle. Common patterns: 1 blink = thermocouple/flame sensor issue, 4 blinks = high temperature cutoff tripped, 7 blinks = gas valve failure. Check the label on your unit for the specific blink code chart, and call for service if you can’t resolve it.
